Gregory Peck, who has portrayed a cowboy, senior grade, in six king-sized Westerns on the screen, and whose seventh, "The Bravados" is about to open at the Centre Theatre, has decided to become a cowboy in real life.
The tall, rugged actor has gone into the cattle business by leasing an 1800-acre "spread" in central California's picturesque Santa Inez Mountains. He has already stocked the layout with 600 head of white-faced Hereford and hopes his new enterprise will prove as profitable as his cinematic shenanigans with the shorthorns.
His current CinemaScope, De Luxe Color drama, "The Bravados," also is responsible for another addition to his spread. Its name is "Recuerdo," Hollywood's equine equivalent to Ferdinand, the bull, who wanted only to stand and smell pretty flowers.
"Recuerdo," which means "remembrance," was sired by "Tupinamba," who is spoken of in Mexico with the same reverence that chalk-players use when they mention such steeds as Citation and Silky Sullivan. The only trouble with "Recuerdo" is that he simply does not like to run in competition as his turf followers painfully discovered. In eight trips to the starting gate, he finished dead last each time. But this beautiful hunk of black horse flesh has finally found his niche in life. He got one taste of working in front of a Hollywood camera and decided that acting beats racing by a dozen furlongs.
"Recuerdo" is Gregory Peck's horse in "The Bravados" and the two founded a mutual admiration society resulting in Peck's outright purchase of the steed for his new ranch.
