HELL GATE ROUTE IS OPEN TO FREIGHT SERVICE.
A War Measure to Speed Up Movement of Necessities.
New York, Jan. 16.-Opening of the Hell Gate bridge route for freight service beginning tomorrow, establishing for the first time a more direct line for traffic from New England through New York city to the south and southeast, was announced here tonight as a war measure to speed up freight movement.

This route avoids the long water haul through New York harbor, establishing an all-rail connection between the New Haven and Pennsylvania roads, except for a comparatively short tow between Brooklyn and Greenville, N. J. It has been in operation for passenger traffic only since last March.
