Full Text
The Bath Times, the organ of Locofocoism in Lincoln county, states that Governor Crosby by signing the new liquor law has made certain his political downfall. The Times regards the liquor bill as interfering with inalienable rights, and it rejoices that this interference is now to be visited upon the head of a Whig Governor. We shall see what we shall see. The people of Maine have sustained with great force and honor the legal efforts to rid Maine of the curse of its tippling shops and its drunkenness and attendant wretchedness and poverty. Every step has given birth to high moral ideas regarding government and its duties to the public. Maine intends to take no steps backward in this matter, and if the leaders and presses of the loco party are determined, as they seem to be, to invoke a rum issue in the opening campaign, they will thereby necessarily drive the friends of the law into an opposition to that issue and consequently into a vigorous support of the friends of the law.—Bangor Whig.
