A correspondence is going on between Representative Blackburn (ex-Confederate), of Kentucky, and General Burbridge ex-Union officer, of the same State, in relation to certain things done by both during the war, which are not regarded by many people as greatly to the credit of either. Blackburn alleges that General Burbridge was unnecessarily and barbarously severe in many of his acts, which "put him beyond the pale of civilized warfare, in the twilight of barbarism, or worse, in the domain of actual crime." Burbridge defends himself less rhetorically: he cites instructions given to him by General Sherman and other superiors "to hunt down every guerrilla and robber in Kentucky;" quotes letters from Montgomery Blair, Salmon P. Chase, Robert J. Breckinridge, D. M. Key and others, approving of his military conduct, and closes by an allusion levelled at Blackburn to the alleged introduction of yellow fever clothing by rebels into northern cities, at one period of the war. Whether the controversy will end in an 'affair of honor' is a question agitating the friends of the respective correspondents; but the general impression seems to be that it will stop short of gore.
