MR. FENNO,
The editor of the Aurora has with his usual
impartiality, given his readers a partial comparison
of the two last elections, from which he
draws a drop of consolation to his drooping
friends, by assuring them that the republican
spirit of the city is rising—I should wish him
to extend his calculations into Southwark, but
perhaps it would hurt his feelings to go there;
the discipline administered to his party would
prove that a true republican spirit is there rapidly
rising—upon his own principles (such as
they are) this comparison will prove that his
party is fast declining. October election, Morgan
had 75, at the special one 32—At the former
Israel had 984, at the latter he had 746—beside,
the election was declared illegal on the
ground that a number of bad votes were given
in this very district. It is rather degrading to
attempt to prove that the decision of the committee
of the senate was justly founded, but as
they have been wickedly traduced in several
anonymous publications, a small sample of one
of them will suffice—where he says, that justice
is prostrated, and their consciences put to sleep by
the anodyne of faction. It will therefore not be
amiss to look at the gross number of votes of the
two elections. October election there were 1099,
at the special one 1068—thus we see that in the
late struggle, when the forces of both parties
were mustered, there were only nine more votes
given than in October, when the sickness too
was so severe that they could not hold the election
in their usual place on that account. I think
this an incontestable proof that the election was
illegal and justly set aside. This lie alone (of
Israel being a persecuted, injured man, by being
wrongfully turned out) certainly obtained him
100 votes at least. It was in almost every Israelite's
mouth, he was turned out, and we will
vote for him—whether he is suitable or not is
no question—he is injured and we will redress
his wrongs.

Main Argument
the aurora editor's claim of rising republican spirit is false; vote comparisons in southwark show declining support, and the special election was illegally influenced by fraudulent votes and sympathy for israel, justifying its annulment by the senate committee.
