HITLER WORKED WAR SCHEDULE BACKWARD
As the uncanny giant stratosphere bombs, hurled from runways perhaps 300 miles away, fall upon London, and as observers insist the Germans have rockets powerful enough to reach New York from their homeland catapults, it appears that Hitler got his war schedule backwards.
Manifestly these V-2 bombs as they are dubbed represent the last gigantic scare effort before Germany expires. That there are too few of them available to become a formidable weapon at this late day is known and it is too late for Hitler to turn out any mass quantity.
Opinion differs as to the possibility of shooting these death-dealers clear across the Atlantic, but it generally is agreed it could be accomplished. But again the element of numbers figures against any grave danger.
But had Hitler not been so sure that his air might would reduce Britain speedily and make her an easy prey then for his great ground armed strength and had he, instead, started out with his rocket bombers, there would be a different story.
Not that he could have won in the end, but there would have been destruction beyond imagination and there might have been the chance of making terms.
In this connection had he put the same strategy within the hands of the Japanese at the very outset, another story would have been written about the war in the Pacific. But Japan put her entire faith in her navy as the conquering force against the United States, and there too was failure just as Hitler's judgment was wrong on air might. Of course, neither Hitler nor Hirohito even guessed that Britain and America could catch up and pass them in production of war material.
Here again stratosphere bombs could have wrought havoc.
Shortly even the stratosphere bomb will be out of the picture. The try was an amazing final struggle, no more. Just another example of wilful destruction to no purpose, and that has characterized Hitler from the start.
