LITERARY NOTES

"The Art of Cross Examination," by Mr. Francis L. Wellman of the New York bar, gives the results of his experience in examining and cross-examining witnesses, together with illustrations of cross-examination from celebrated trials, and descriptions of the methods of the masters of the art. The book is of popular interest because the most dramatic incidents in great causes centre in the cross-examination of some important witness or witnesses: it is also of value to the profession. The Macmillan Company are the publishers.

Next week The Macmillan Company will publish Mrs. Alice Morse Earle's new book, "Two Centuries of Costume in America." The two volumes are very fully and richly illustrated. The subject of American costume, which has been singularly neglected, is now presented for the first time in an adequate manner.

The Christmas Century will have the ninth of Timothy Cole's wood engravings of old Spanish masters, very appropriately a detail from "The Adoration of the Shepherds," by Murillo. The original is in the museum at Seville.

Andre Saglio will tell about "The Bigoudines" in the December Century, a little known and peculiar people among the Bretons. The Bigoudines may be found only an hour's journey from Quimper, the modernized chief town of Finistere: but their dress suggests the Eskimos and Chinese, their faces are strongly Mongolian in type, and in language, customs, and belief they seem to have no relation with the rest of France. M. Saglio's article is the fruit of several years' comparative research.
