Spontaneous Combustion.

Carson Appeal, Sept. 3.

It is not at all improbable that the fire at Judge Hawley's residence night before last had its origin in the spontaneous combustion of some oiled rags left in the back part of the house. A Chinese servant had been in the habit of cleaning lamps and piling the oiled rags on a shelf in one of the rear rooms of the house. It was in this room that the fire was first discovered and just behind the shelf where the rags had been left the siding was burned completely away. The greater portion of the house was burned inside, and although a person passing the place would hardly notice anything wrong, the loss arising from the burning of twelve rooms out of sixteen and the damage arising from moving furniture is estimated at about $3000. The house and furniture was insured for $5000 in the Fireman's Fund Insurance Company.
