Natural Bridge Va., Nov. 19.—Blind bulldog won immortal fame here this week by falling off the top of Natural Bridge of Virginia, 215 feet and surviving the experience. While other animals have been known to make the plunge in the past, the dog is the first to survive the accident. He fell into a four foot pool of water in a stream which passes under the bridge. An entire party of tourists under the bridge saw the incident and say that the dog turned over in the air three times and struck the water on an angle, making an almost perfect shallow water dive, and was propelled from the water by the force of the fall, cut and bleeding but alive and able to walk. He was promptly stolen the same night by a souvenir hunter who heard the story and who is being sought in the Shenandoah Valley by the bridge management.
The old dog wandered off the highway near the bridge top and in some manner got behind the high protecting wall which has been erected on top of the bridge to keep anything from falling from the top of the natural wonder upon visitors who are walking below. The fence has been built close to the edge of the precipice and the dog slipped and fell into space. His head was most damaged although his entire body was badly bruised. The fall was witnessed by 15 people who made up a party which a guide was showing the bridge.
According to the management there is a legend that once a drove of cattle was stampeded over the top of the bridge by dogs and during the Virginia State fox hunt at the bridge two years ago a fox led the hounds to the brink of the bridge, doubled sharply and escaped. The first dog to reach the edge of the chasm arrived with such impetus that he fell into space and was killed by the fall.
