Know North Carolina
Recent addition of many new books by the Perry library on subjects dealing with North Carolina and its people is cause for gratification. Readers who rely on the library for their study of varied subjects should delight in this new strain of thought that is made available for them.
As citizens of a great State, most of us know all too little about the land of our nativity or adoption. We have a notion that all too small emphasis is given to North Carolina history in the public schools. Somewhere along about the fifth, sixth or seventh grades a course is run in that may be good enough as far as it goes, but it can hardly be rated as sufficient to give the rising generation the familiarity required for a fairly thorough knowledge of the men and events that have made the State great.
The library, however, is leaving no stone unturned in doing its share toward offering the sources of such learning to those who may be interested. Volumes that have been added may not necessarily be a mere recounting of the State's chronology, as such, but they do provide something in the way of information on the kind and type of men and women who have contributed, or are now doing so, to the building of a bigger and better commonwealth about us.
No generation can be its best without a knowledge of its past, and that is true for citizens of any state. For each of us a part of a well rounded educational program should be to know North Carolina - its outstanding men and women of the past and present, its climate, its resources, its industry, agriculture and advantages in general that are here for utilization toward a happier living.
