Full Text

The resolution introduced into the House of Representatives by Mr. Heath, one of the members from Virginia, would not, if adopted, prevent congressional intelligence from being published in the Gazettes. The publication of sketches of the debates in the Gazette of the United States, commenced with the government under the present constitution. During the first session, the reporter took his stand in the gallery—At the instance of some of the members he was indulged with a desk on the floor of the House.

It is now seven years since the business began, and no charge of wilful misrepresentation has ever been made.

If the resolution is adopted, of which there is not the smallest probability, the reporter will have to take his stand in the gallery; for the Right, of conveying congressional information to the people can not be denied, and will not be relinquished.
