The original townsite of Billings-named after Frederick Billings, president of the Northern Pacific railway, 1879-1881-was platted in March, 1882. By June of that year it had 500 inhabitants. Billings was incorporated in 1885, John Tully being the first mayor. A privately owned water works system was established in 1886 and electric lights were introduced in 1887.
Billings is the intersection of the Northern Pacific, Burlington and Great Northern railways and the center of the Midland Empire trading area, serving Eastern Montana and Northern Wyoming.
A recently completed census gave Billings and adjoining subdivisions a population of 29,406.
