RED CROSS LIFE SAVING TEACHER IN VISIT TO CITY

Man Is to Be Sent Here During Summer Months

The Red Cross life saving and first aid committee gave a luncheon yesterday at the Randolph hotel, with Captain J. F. Law, field representative of the American Red Cross, as the principal speaker. Arrangements have been made by a committee of the Red Cross in Ouachita and Union counties to employ through Captain Law an instructor in life-saving and first aid work to be here for two months this summer.

The instructor will be sent by national headquarters and is expected to be here in time for the Boy Scout De Soto encampment, June 22 to July 2.

Captain Law spoke briefly to the guests at the luncheon of the value of a swimming instructor and outlined plans for co-operating with such an instructor's work. He gave statistics gathered in 1924 showing that 10,000 lives were lost by drowning and then compared the following year when the Red Cross sponsored a national course of instruction, with a loss of life due to drowning numbering 4,000 persons.

The program mapped out by Captain Law for use of an instructor included the awards to be made for swimming prowess. He said a certificate should be given for a 15-hour course of instruction, that for learning to swim 50 feet a button should be given; and for passing the life-saving test an insignia award should be made.

Donald MacQueen and Hugh Davis were appointed on a committee to make arrangements for the work to be done here by the instructor.

Members of the committee who gave the luncheon were Donald MacQueen, H. H. Niehuss, Albert Rowell, R. N. Benson, W. M. Bellott and Miss Rose Whipp.

Guests were Dr. F. O. Mahony, Miss Irene McCall, Paul Wells, W. M. Jones, Dr. H. J. Crume, Hugh Davis, C. E. Franklin, Doctor Green and G. S. Dunham.
