PANAMA. (UP) Panama's national assembly gave its final approval Monday night extending the country's territorial waters 12 miles out from its shore. The territorial limit has been three miles.
The bill now goes to President Ernesto De La Guardia for his signature.
The extension completely surrounds the two seaward ends of the 10-mile-wide Panama Canal Zone. The United States by its treaty with Panama has jurisdiction over Canal Zone waters only out to the old three-mile limit.
The United States in the past has refused to recognize territorial claims beyond the three-mile limit.
