MONTANA PIONEERS.
The Annual Convention of the "Old Timers" of the Territory.
Full Proceedings of this Morning's Session.
The Pioneers Association of Montana began its annual session this morning at 10 o'clock. There was some slight misunderstanding about the use of the court room, owing to the Stock Growers Association having fixed upon it for their annual meeting, and having unfortunately chosen the same day and hour. They most courteously waived any right they deemed theirs in the matter, and so the Pioneers took possession. Colonel DeLacy, as president called the meeting to order at 10:35. About FIFTY MEMBERS WERE PRESENT.
By the rules of the association, the president of the association should deliver an address upon some topic of interest concerning the early days. Colonel DeLacy apologized for the non-delivery of the customary address. He pleaded in extenuation a great stress of business in the Surveyor General's office, where he was working, and the fact that the weak condition of his eyes prevented his working at night. He had intended to prepare a sketch of the expedition of W. Stevens and Lieutenant Mullan, with which he was most familiar. He wished to make a few suggestions. One was that a book should be kept, in which all the names of the Pioneers should be alphabetically registered: another, that a committee should be appointed to act as a committee of qualification and examine into the justice of the claim of those who desire to become members of the association. Colonel DeLacy also suggested extending the time for the admission of members to January 1, 1865, instead of limiting it to the present date, May 26, 1864, and that it might be advisable for the members to pay annual dues for the necessary printing and other expenses. At present the treasury was quite empty. He also advocated the wearing of some kind of a badge. Colonel DeLacy wound up his short address with a well deserved tribute to Judge Hedges for his active labors in arranging for the banquet to-night. Colonel Sanders then moved that Colonel DeLacy TO FINISH THE ADDRESS he had contemplated delivering and file it with the recording secretary for publication in some of the Territorial papers. This motion was carried.
It was then moved and carried that Mr. John Potter should be elected recording secretary pro tem., as Mr. Wilson, the regular secretary, was absent.
Judge Hedges then stated that he had already begun the preparation of the book of Pioneers, as the president had suggested, and suggested that a necrology record be kept.
Mr. W. J. McCormick, of Missoula, here introduced the following resolution:
Resolved, That a committee of five be appointed to be known as a committee on credentials who shall be residents of the city of Helena, whose duty it shall be to receive and examine all applications for membership to the association, with accompanying proofs or data entitling persons to admission under the constitution, and who shall report the names of such as are entitled to admission at the next regular meeting of the association; and it shall be the further duty of said committee to examine the qualifications of those already enrolled as members, and report the names such as in the judgement of said committee are not entitled to be continued on the roll as members of the association.
After a good deal of argument on the above resolution by Col. Sanders Mr. McCormick, Mr. Collins, Governor Hauser and Judge Carleton, of Deer Lodge, the resolution was finally carried. Col. Sanders then gave notice, as required by the constitution, that he should make the following motion at the next meeting of the Pioneers:
All persons who were residents of Montana on or before December 25, 1864, now residing therein, and none other, shall be eligible to membership in the society of Montana Pioneers, nor shall any motion to amend or repeal this section ever be in order.
ELECTION OF OFFICERS.
The election of officers for the ensuing year was then taken up and after a slight discussion it was decided to vote for President by ballot. Granville Stuart and Col Sanders' names were placed in nomination and the ballot showed the following result: Thirty-five votes cast; necessary to a choice, eighteen, of which Mr. Stuart received 23, Sanders 9, scattering 3. Mr Stuart was then declared to be the choice of the electors present.
A vice president from each county was then nominated by acclamation and the following names were chosen:
Chas. Blivens, Beaverhead.
Z. G. Mackay, Choteau.
John C. Gay, Custer.
Thomas Griffith, Deer Lodge.
E. Wilson, Jefferson.
