[COMMUNICATED.]

A communication signed "Valerius" has appeared in the Alexandria Gazette, recommending the Hon. John C. Herbert as a suitable candidate of the United States. The good people of Maryland will no doubt acknowledge the kindness of "Valerius" in taking so much interest in the State, I have no objection to their electing Mr. Herbert, or any other gentleman of his talents and standing, to the Senate;—but if, on the other hand, the Whigs prevail, I think "Valerius" himself will acknowledge that they have belonging to their party gentlemen equal, (to say nothing more) in point of talents, information, services and general character, to Mr. Herbert. Here, then, we can choose both men and measures. The candidates being on the same footing, we go for the right cause.

"And may the right prevail!"

Main Argument

while john c. herbert is a qualified candidate for u.s. senate, whig party members are equally talented, so maryland should support the whig cause over the candidate's affiliation.
