Full Text

Major Eaton.—We have reason to believe [garbled text omitted] very unfair and ungenerous attempts have been made by the circulation of reports, wholly unfounded, that he would not continue to be a candidate for the Senate of the United States; and a public print has recently gone so far as to announce, without the slightest authority, that his recent election to the presidency of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Company would tend to withdraw him from the contest. This premature and unauthorized annunciation, it is subsequently acknowledged, was not based upon any information on the subject, but seems to have been founded merely on the inferences of the writer. To put an end, therefore, to all such impressions, insinuations and reports, as unfounded as they are ungenerous, we state distinctly and emphatically upon the highest authority, that Major Eaton does not intend to withdraw from the contest. The two offices are in no respect incompatible, and his election to the one will not change his determination of continuing a candidate for the other.—

Col. Mercer has been a member of Congress during the whole period in which he has presided over the Company. The duties of the offices do not at all conflict with each other, and may be efficiently discharged by the same individual.

As we are "fully authorized" to make the foregoing annunciation, common justice requires that all who have aided in circulating rumors of Major Eaton's intended withdrawal, will now give them a prompt and explicit contradiction.
