Chamber To Continue Work On Shakes Isl.
Wrangell Chamber of Commerce President Doris Barnes reported on the successful Chamber and Civic Club sponsored clean up picnic at the Chamber meeting last Monday and the members agreed to further work to clean the cemetery swimming beach. R. H. Armstrong volunteered to use his truck to pick up the trash gathered at last Sunday's clean up and Jack Krepps volunteered to place trash barrels on the beach. The barrels are 50 gallon oil drums donated by Z. M. Brauford of Standard Oil.

Shakes Island Bridge
Don House reported that he and city maintenance man Frank Zepp examined the Shakes Island bridge and found that it would take 16 to 18 new poles to make it safe for the tourist season. Zepp and House estimated the work on the bridge and cutting the grass on the island would cost about $300.

President Barnes said she would head the committee to solicit funds to put the bridge in order.

Corr's. Secretary Joel Wing reported that he had collected about $50 from Chamber members to go toward a $100 voting membership in the Alaska Visitors Association for the organization. Each Chamber member is being assessed $2 to $2.50 for the AVA fund.

Protest Log Export
In a formal resolution to the Regional Forester, the Secretary of Agriculture, U. S. Forest Service, Delegate E. L. Bartlett the chamber asked that everything be done to prevent the exporting of Alaska logs to mills in the States.

The resolution cited that the export of logs to Alaska would mean no sawmills or pulp mills would be established in the Territory but all logs would be shipped to the States for processing.

The resolution was unanimously approved after a brief report on the question from assistant Regional Forester Charles Burdick was read. The Forest Service in Alaska is opposed to the export idea.
