Full Text

False Pretences.—There is a crime known to our code, and severely punished by our laws, that is called obtaining money under false pretences. Had William Lloyd Garrison obtained the funds with which he defrayed the expense of his late mission to England from this community, he would doubtless have been obnoxious to its penalties, had he crossed the path of High Constable Hays When he obtained those funds he publicly declared his object to be to procure assistance to establish a Manual Labor School for the benefit of people of color. Since his return he avows his object to have been the following: "The great object of my mission—namely, the exposure of the real character and object of the American Colonization Society." 'That this object, now admitted, was the real one, we have never doubted; nor that the money advanced for fitting him out was appropriated to a purpose foreign from the ostensible one. This species of fraud is worthy of the cause, and of the perpetrator.—New York Con. Adju.
