Full Text
There is no man in America so well acquainted with the French character as the President; he has had greater opportunities of knowing it; he has more than once been assailed by the whole train and resources of their diplomatic skill; and the fisheries, the western lands, and even the independence of our country, witness his impenetrable firmness. When our treaty of peace with England was on the tapis, and had consented to yield the most important points to the crafty Vergennes. Mr. Adams rose and put an end to their intrigues at once, by solemnly declaring that unless these were preliminary and absolutely conceded, he would break up the negotiation at once. But this is but one of numberless acts of his life, which show that he possesses a mind uncommonly penetrating, upright and decisive, fully equal to every trying occasion. Under the safeguard of such talents and integrity then we may well repose our fullest confidence. Time will certainly illustrate the propriety of this opinion.
