MEMPHIS, July 16, 1862.
General Hovey is in command, vice General Grant, who, with staff, is expected to be called to Corinth at any moment. The fortifications here are being pushed to completion with rapidity. They will be formidable, and are intended as permanent forts of defence.
Several female secessionists were yesterday escorted beyond the federal lines by General Thayer, they having refused to take the oath of allegiance. Their husbands are among the most wealthy citizens of Memphis, and are now serving in the rebel army.
