A NIGHTMARISH QUALITY seemed to pervade the sensational "press conference" held in Russia early this week, with two young Americans in the limelight.
The two were young code clerks from the super-secret U. S. National Security Agency (NSA) who fled to Russia a short time ago, and then assumed the roles of "exposers" of American spying and aggressive actions.
In a way they sounded like comic book characters, and the setting was perfect for their performance, because they were broadcasting these sensational charges from Soviet Russia, which not only is the prize spy-ring headquarters of all time, but which has openly boasted of its espionage activities and successes.
But these two young men who said they have renounced American citizenship and in end intend to become Soviet citizens aren't moronic types who have fallen easy prey to transparent Soviet propaganda.
They were considered to be bright young men, or they wouldn't have been given the important and highly confidential jobs they held in one of the nation's most important security agencies.
So what happened? Who knows? They sounded quite a bit off-beat in some of their remarks, certainly. For instance, they said people living in the U. S. who didn't believe in God were persecuted. We don't believe it.
Then was this dilly - that talents of women were encouraged to a much greater extent in the Soviet Union than in the U.S., and they felt that this not only "enriches Soviet society" but "makes Soviet women more desirable as mates."
And just to think that only the other day we read another of those articles pointing out that 80 per cent - or more -- of this nation's wealth is in the hands of, or controlled by, women.
