From Boston, July 21.
I am astonished at the abuse, which some of our papers pour on President Adams. Are any men's schemes so desperate as to require being propped by sacrificing the reputation of the man, who stands foremost in the confidence of every sound federalist, the man who treads in the firm steps of conscious honor, and pursues, with uniformity, a line of conduct which alone will secure the seats of power from the pollution of jacobinisn, and prevent desperate factions from running our political barque upon the rocks of perdition. The man, who having formed his opinions and tested them, does not change at the beck of his Secretaries; nor from the influence of the obstinate, self consequential, or groveling minions, fly into the proud, vaunted, and solemn declaration (of War,) and in a moment prostrate, what years have been employed to erect. I own from some symptoms, which have been manifested from the New-Englandmen, we have some little reason to apprehend, that the votes will not be unanimous for Mr. Adams, (as President.) If they are not, as sure as Jehovah, a Jacobin Captain will command, and the Commander will be Jefferson.
