Nominee for Sheriff on the Republican Ticket. A Successful Business Man.
The Republican candidate for sheriff of St. Clair county is Henry A. Rose, of the sixth ward of the city of Port Huron. Mr. Rose was born of German parentage May 4, 1865, at Bark Shanty, now known as Port Sanilac, Sanilac county. He came to Port Huron in early life and at the age fourteen circumstances compelled him to strike out for himself. His first employment was driving express wagon for the grocery firm of Geo. Fish & Son. He seemed to take naturally to the grocery business and rapidly advanced to clerk and general manager of the business. By his natural German thrift he was finally able to start in business for himself and purchased the Henry Kessell grocery, at the corner of Eighth and Chestnut streets, in 1889. This business he has successfully continued for the past 13 years. He has been a prominent member of the Merchants' and Manufacturers' association, taking an important part in all its functions. In politics Mr. Rose has always been a steadfast Republican and has been an earnest worker in the ranks of the party. He served his apprenticeship as a member of the ward committee, being its chairman for a time. He has also been on the city committee and a member of the executive committee for the county. In recognition of his services the convention last June saw fit to place his name on the ticket for the important office of sheriff. It is the first time he has been up before the people for election to any office. He served a short time on the board of estimates, being elected by the council to fill a vacancy and in 1899 was appointed deputy salt inspector by State Inspector Caswell at the direction of Governor Pingree. Mr. Rose is conscientious and in his habits is strictly temperate and moral and is well qualified to serve the county of St. Clair as its sheriff. Although it is apparent that the Democrats will center their fight on the county ticket against him his friends will see that a good account is rendered for him on election day and a big majority is confidently looked for.
