PALMETTO POINTERS

SPINDLES OF SPARTANBURG.

21 Cotton Factories, 320,686 Spindles,
8,908 Looms and 113,700 Bales
Consumed Annually.

This is the title of a little publication just issued which makes a most attractive souvenir of Spartanburg. In a beautifully embossed cover pictures of the cotton mills of the county are given, with a short statement as to each covering such points as where it is located, when built, capital stock, number of spindles and looms, number of operatives and amount of cotton consumed. This information has been carefully compiled, and is, in fact, the first complete publication in convenient form ready for reference. A copy of this little book ought to be placed in the hands of every man who has ever thought about coming to Spartanburg to make his home. There is nothing in the publication except a short sketch of the first mill; and pictures and statistics relative to the other mills. These speak eloquently enough.

When this little pamphlet falls into the hands of a stranger he will be impressed with the fact that Spartanburg County has twenty-one cotton factories, counting the four in process of construction. He will note that these factories represent an invested capital of $1,581,000; that they have 320,686 spindles and 8,908 looms. He will take note also of the fact that these factories consume 113,700 bales of cotton annually. He will find significance in the fact that 6,340 operatives are employed, and, counting five to the family, which is a reasonable estimate, nearly half the population of Spartanburg County are dependent on the cotton mill business, are paid in cash for their services the year round and depend upon the local markets for the necessities of life.

This little pamphlet shows that one million, one hundred and twenty-seven thousand nine hundred dollars are paid to operatives, the average amount of each operative being more than $175.
