A WESTERN ORATOR.
In copying from the National Intelligencer, the list of Visitors appointed to attend the West Point examination the present year, we were led into the inaccuracy of styling Joseph Holt, of Kentucky, Joseph Hobb—an inaccuracy, of the importance of which we were not duly sensible, until we read the following extract from a Baltimore letter, giving a sketch of the oratorical powers of a Mr. Holt, of Kentucky, who, we take for granted, has earned the honorable distinction of Visitor to West Point, by his ready obedience to orders, from head-quarters:
'Baltimore, May 22, 1835.
Van Buren was elected—nominated, I mean. H— unanimously. By the by, I had nearly forgotten the principal thing: the Vice President, R. M. Johnson is elected—that is, I mean, by the convention, which is like a "promise to pay" from a man who does not know whether he can pay or not.—The vote is 178 to 87. Two-thirds having been required as an elective majority, this did not do much more than elect Mr. Johnson. We had, of course, many, very many, orations; but the applause was chiefly given to a young gentleman from Kentucky, named Holt. Had his speech been sifted, you might possibly have found two grains of wheat in his bushel of chaff; but we had to take it as it came. Let us, however, do the audience the justice to say that they made the roof re-echo to the tune of "Well roar'd, lion!" at the end of every fifth word. He absolutely did roar. I do not, of course, dispute the purity of his motives, although he has given me a severe head-ache.'
Pretending that our readers may desire to know who attended the Baltimore caucus from Virginia, we subjoin a list of them:
Tucker Coles. T. W. Maury. T. Durrett, C. H. Harrison, W. H. Brockenbrough, G. Carr, F. Lawson, H. M. Garland, G. Ellis, M. Cabell, H. Hedges, G. Hedges, L. Steinrod, S. Austin, P. Lightfoot, B. F.
