Full Text

Buffalo, Oct. 19, 1833.—Gale on Lake Erie. On Thursday night, at about 11 o'clock, A. M. a strong breeze sprung up from the west, and soon hauled to the north ward and west ward, followed immediately by heavy rain, increasing to the greatest gale ever experienced on the Lake, and continuing with unabated fury until 2 o'clock yesterday morning, blowing down chimneys and sweeping off roofs of buildings. The five block of brick stores of Bennett, Macy & Williams, just finished on the terrace, were stripped of their heavy tin roofs, or rather, they were torn up and thrown into a confused mass. The water flooded the Flats, and vast quantities of wood, staves, lumber generally, &c. were floating in confusion about the canals, slips and creeks, and a number of docks torn up. Steamboat Enterprise, driven back, came into the harbor about 4 o'clock, P. M: in good order, and several other vessels have arrived safe.
