JUSTICE.

From the PUBLIC LEDGER, April 9.

TO THE PEOPLE OF ENGLAND.

Friends and Fellow Countrymen,

As a Friend to my Country, and to Posterity, it gives me inexpressible Concern to see all the public Prints occupied by writers employed for the base Purpose of raising a Spirit of Resentment in you, against your American Brethren.

Government hath, from the Day of the Revolution, found Means to carry on Measures with an high Hand, by a Plan then laid down, and ever since steadily adhered to, that of keeping, by Means of Places, Pensions, and Placemen, a constant Majority in the House of Commons. Thus have Administration been able to burthen you with whatever Taxes and Impositions they thought fit, the Majority receiving, individually, fifty-fold more out of the Money raised by those Impositions, than they in common with you, could themselves suffer by giving their Consent.

But at length it has been found, by the most able & subtle Financiers of these Kingdoms, that the Supplies necessary to the Payment of the Interest of the national Debt, (so wantonly incurred by profligate Ministers) and for carrying on the iniquitous practice of bribing your Representatives from your Service to that of the Ministry, cannot be longer raised in Britain — they now therefore wish to extend to America their intolerable Impost, in order to enable them to continue their oppressive Tyranny over you.

The Motive of this Extension of Taxes to America every thinking Man must abhor, well knowing that the Design of Government is not to ease the British Subject of his Burthen, but to place his American Brother in a State of equal Oppression: I therefore hope the Americans will steadily oppose and refuse Submission to the present, and intended, arbitrary and unconstitutional taxations about to be imposed upon them, for by resisting tyranny only can they preserve their own Freedom, and render America a happy Asylum for Men desirous of enjoying that Liberty to which they are legally entitled, as to any other valuable Privilege, by birth-right.
