Canadian Red Organizer Arrested In New York

WASHINGTON, Jan. 27 (AP) -- The Justice Department said today the FBI has arrested Sam Carr, former organizing secretary of the Canadian Communist party.

The announcement said Carr was arrested in New York. It described him as a key figure in Soviet spying in Canada.

He played an important part, the department said, in the spy network which was exposed in September, 1945, after some testimony by Igor Gouzenko, a Russian embassy cipher clerk.

FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover said Carr is wanted in Canada for violation of the official secrets act.
