Yanks, Led by Nisei Officer, Defies
Yugoslav Demand to Yield Land
TRIESTE, Sept. 23-Led by a Nisei officer, 2nd Lt. Harry Konishi, a small squad of American soldiers defied a Yugoslav demand to surrender a 60-yard patch of Italian territory last week.
A Yugoslav detachment gave the American lieutenant and about six men until noon to back out of the area, but Konishi ordered his men to dig in behind sandbags and hold their ground.
An official spokesman announced later that the Yugoslavs had not made any advance at noon, "but we cannot say that the situation has been settled yet."
Lieut. Konishi said that as far as he could see, only a few Yugoslavs were facing him across the border at Outpost No. 8, but there was an anti-tank gun in Yugoslav territory about 400 yards away. He said his men had only Browning automatic rifles.
An hour before the ultimatum expired, he reported to headquarters: "I am holding my ground."
The area which the Yugoslavs want is about 10 miles north of Trieste and includes only one house and a small patch of ground.
Last month a Hawaii Nisei was one of 12 U. S. soldiers held prisoner for one week by Yugoslav troops while a Nisei was killed in an ambuscade last year in one of the first instances of friction between U. S.-British troops and Yugoslavs.
Many Nisei GIs are serving with the 88th Mountain division on duty in the Trieste area.
