Full Text

Leyden, July 25.—It has been an observation, by no means ill founded, that the French when attacked on their own ground, know well how to defend themselves to the best advantage. This was amply proved in the failure of the attack of the Austrian General Latour upon Orchies. The object of this attack was to capture a French detachment that lay in this garrison, in which the Austrians totally failed, besides losing many soldiers, and among the officers M. Zeiger, captain of artillery, whose life was more worth than the whole garrison an hundred times over. The number of Austrians that came to the attack was one thousand. The place was defended by 50 men of a regiment, 50 dragoons, and 500 soldiers.
