SEOUL, (AP) Gen. James A. Van Fleet, who turns over command of the Eighth Army next month to Lt. Gen. Maxwell Taylor, said Saturday he would "with heavy heart" say goodbye to his troops of many free nations.

Retirement of the 60-year-old amiable general from active duty was announced in Washington on Friday. Taylor, a fiery, 51-year-old paratrooper, was scheduled to leave for Tokyo Monday.

After conferring with General Mark Clark, United Nations commander, Taylor will come to Korea to take command early in February. Van Fleet, whose retirement from the Army becomes effective March 31, will leave for the United States and possibly for a high post in the United Nations.

General Clark said in Tokyo Saturday that with Van Fleet's retirement the United States is losing one of its most outstanding officers.
