FOREST HILLS, N. Y.—Lacking the enlivening presence of Miss Helen Wills, national champion, the women's national tennis championship went into its second day today with a record of unexciting first round play behind it and a prospect of wet courts and maybe raining skies ahead.
All the seeded and ranking players came through yesterday's matches as expected.
There were no upsets. Play was before a small crowd.
