Full Text

On the sudden death of an only daughter and only sister, who lately dy'd at Kittery,—Olive Peirce, a child 6 years of age.

LIVIA. beauteous, lovely girl!
Upon her parents smil'd,
Added to ev'ry rising joy,
And all their Cares beguil'd.

Her form from nature's nicest mould
Did ev'ry charm disclose,
Her face was as the lily fair,
And blooming as the rose.

Her mind with each soft grace endu'd
Outwent her early prime;
For ah! the tender flow'ret pin'd,
And dy'd before its time.

Commission'd by her heav'nly sire,
In grief's distressing hour,
Death's fatal minister came down,
And cropt the beauteous flow'r.

Thus the young Olive, lovely plant
In some gay rural scene,
By living fountains, and cool shades
Crown'd with perpetual green,

Shoots forth its tender blooms around,
(The gard'ner's pride and care)
And with enriching balmy sweets,
Perfumes the ambient air.

When lo! fierce whirlwinds from above,
The lovely plant surprize;
Uprooted from its native bed,
It withers, droops and dies.

So dy'd this lovelier flow'r! yet cease
To cherish fruitless woes!
Since what once bloom'd, and wither'd here
In Heav'n unfading blows.
