WAS THERE A GOVERNOR?

It will be observed by the proceedings of Thursday that a message was sent by the Senate to Gov. Paine, and thereupon we understand some have queried whether he was then Governor.—We can hardly doubt that he was Governor at least for one year from the time he took the oath of office, and the highest judicial authority has given the opinion that the Governor holds his office until a successor is appointed. We will endeavor to give the opinion of the Supreme Court on this question, which we believe has never been published.

J. Wingate Thornton, Esq. of Boston, has been appointed Commissioner to take depositions and acknowledgments of deeds, &c. for Vermont.
