Gen. Scott Nominated.
On the 21st ult., the Whig National Convention, in session at Baltimore, nominated Gen. Scott as the whig candidate for the Presidency. We believed, and predicted, weeks ago, that he would be the nominee. Whig Editors ridiculed the idea, and said that he stood no chance of obtaining the nomination. With them, the wish was father to the thought—for they knew that the Southern people had good cause to view him with distrust; and that the masses were very far from reposing in him that confidence which is so essentially necessary to insure success. A goodly portion of the delegates in the Convention, too, appeared to mistrust him—if actions are to be taken as an index to one's thoughts. On the 53d ballot—the one at which the nomination was made—out of one hundred and six votes from the Southern States, Gen. Scott received only fifteen! This shows that he is the candidate of the North, where the free soil faction lies—that the South had no confidence in him, and was loth to bring so unsafe a candidate before the country. As to the propriety and safety of selecting, much less electing, Gen. Scott to the Presidency, we prefer, at present, to let a distinguished member of the whig party speak, by referring the reader to an article under the caption, "To the Whigs of Lincoln County," which we publish as a leader in today's paper.
Wm. A. Graham, of North Carolina, was nominated as the whig candidate for Vice President
"Another Daniel come to Judgment."
Gen. Scott, who is now the nominee of the whig party for President of the U. S., like the lamented Gen. Taylor, has received the severest blows of his life from the whig party. Horace Greeley, who is the great Northern whig luminary—and is now one of Gen. Scott's staunchest supporters, as he himself says "on account of his anti-slavery sentiments"—wrote as follows to one of his political conferees in Western New York, previous to the assembling of the Whig National Convention, in 1848:
"Send a delegate to the Convention, if you can, for Clay; if not for Clay, for Corwin: if not for Corwin, for Seward; if not for Seward, for Taylor. But last of all for Scott. Scott is a vain, conceited, coxcomb of a man. His brains, all that he has, are in his epauletts, and if he should be elected President, he would tear the whig party into tatters in less than six months."
Which is Which?
The Nashville True Whig announced John C. Graham as the whig candidate for the Vice Presidency while the Banner runs up the name of Wm. A. Graham. Who is correct? Did the Whig Convention nominate two candidates for the same office, or is there but one with half-a-dozen aliases? We would respectfully suggest that a committee be appointed to ascertain, if possible, what the name of the whig Vice Presidential candidate is, with instructions to report at as early a day as practicable. It appears to us that this is a matter that should be determined.
WHIG PLATFORM.—Last week we inadvertently published only a part of what was then reported to be the Whig Platform on the Compromise. This was wholly unintentional. We prefer, always, to leave our whig friends without excuse. Perhaps, however, this mishap was well enough, since seeing the manner in which they received the nomination of Gen. Scott; to have published the platform entire, it may be they couldn't have bore it. It shall appear next week, verbatim et literatim—it shall.
Gen. Scott's Letters.—Our readers will exercise patience, until we have an opportunity to publish Gen. Scott's letters, which are now being given in several of our exchanges. They partake largely of the soup style.
Gen. Pierce has formally accepted the nomination tendered him by the Democratic Convention.
