"In my last I acquainted you with the publication of a pamphlet against the Papal supremacy which made much noise, and greatly disturbed the Clergy. Since that time, political and commercial matters have been more immediately the objects of our attention; and it is generally believed that a rupture between England and Portugal cannot now be avoided, as the Portuguese Ministry reject with implacable obstinacy all the memorials of Mr. Hay, who had several conferences with them within these few days, but which have no way tended to bring matters to a speedy conclusion. Several English merchants are preparing to leave this place with their families, and will embark the first opportunity for England."
