The Virginius Indemnity.

THE SPANISH PAYMENT TO ENGLISH CLAIMANTS.

[Cork Examiner, Sept. 17.]

The British Charge d'Affaires at Madrid has just gained a peaceful victory over the Spanish authorities in Cuba in relation to the murder of the English prisoners taken on board the Virginius. By dint of great perseverance, some patience and not a little tact, he has induced Senor Comacho to perform the marvellous operation of actually finding a considerable portion of the pecuniary indemnity demanded as compensation to the families of the dead men.
The treasury was in its chronic state of emptiness, but some of the conscript redemption money in respect of the 125,000 men of the reserve happened to come in, or some other amount made its appearance, and enabled the Minister to give satisfaction.
