"The enemy still remain at Amboy. From intelligence received this day, it is doubtful whether they intend retreating to New York, or not. The enemy within these few days have committed the most wanton barbarities, burning houses, cutting down fine orchards, plundering the inhabitants, and threatening to destroy the poor helpless women, by burning them in their houses; these wanton barbarities convince me they intend to embark for New York, or to some other part of the continent; a few days will determine their route. All their horse are carried over to Staten Island, and the greatest part of their baggage on board their shipping. Our army is healthy, and in high spirits, and this campaign, I doubt not, will settle the dispute to our satisfaction. No doubt Howe must be greatly dispirited, finding those, to whom he last year gave protections, turning out to a man, to oppose him. Should they turn and push for Philadelphia, on the banks of the Delaware, they will certainly meet the fate they deserve. The militia are in high spirits, and in readiness to turn out at a moment's warning. Should they attempt Philadelphia, I make not the least doubt but an army of 12,000 men will oppose them in front, while ours will gall them in the rear. Every day declares victory on our side."
