LOWERED THE GATE

And the Horse Car Found Itself Between Two Running Locomotives.

At six o'clock Friday evening, as car No. 140 of the Grove street line was crossing the Erie tracks on its way from Hoboken, it came very near being run down by two locomotives. When about half way over the gate in front of it was shut down and the driver stopped his car just in time to escape being run into by an engine which was backing toward the tunnel on the outside track. Another engine coming head on was brought to standstill a few rods from the car, which was directly in front of it. The gate was finally opened and the car proceeded on its way, much to the relief of the frightened passengers.
