S A L E M, March 25.

We are unhappy in having to mention, the loss of the ship Juno and her cargo, the property of ELIAS HASKET DERBY, Esq. of this town, which sailed from this port in January last, for the Cape of Good-Hope, commanded by Captain Henry Elkins. After being out about 40 hours, experiencing no adversity of weather, at 6 in the morning, the awful alarm of "the ship is sinking," spread terrour fore and aft: so rapid was the increase of water, and so surprizing the report, that overflowing despair had well nigh swallowed them up, by the time they could call all hands. Vain were repeated endeavours to escape the liquid fate their situation threatened, and separate themselves from the unalterable lot of the ship. The most arduous attempts of all on board to secure their lives, were almost yielded to the sovereignty of the sea, when its power appeared less unmerciful, and though one boat was sunk, the other, with extreme difficulty, they at length commanded, as the ultimate preservation of their lives; for in less than 20 minutes after quitting the ship, she went below. So wonderfully was mercy here mixed with judgment, which like light in chaos, glimmered thro'the gloom, that the ship's company had not been cast to the mercy of a treacherous ocean in a small and open boat more than 4 hours, when they were providentially taken up by a sloop, and carried into Demarara. Although destruction stared all in the face, and every wave appeared a gaping grave, with mingled gratitude and a happiness we add, all were miraculously preserved from a watery grave.
