College Notes.

Willie Halsell College is in a flourishing condition, and indications are that there is greater prosperity for her in the not-very-distant future. Considering these facts in connection with those other facts of hard times and sharp competition, the patronage and the management of this college have pride and satisfaction.

The number enrolled is increasing slowly, but substantially; not a "boom," but a gradual, natural growth we have, and the success we crave is not a member of the mushroom family.

The amount of work done by the students, and the quality of it also, is very certainly approaching the high standard demanded by the college.

Pres. Chapman goes to the M. E. conference this week to represent the college, to report upon its condition and in every possible way to render it service. During his absence Mrs. J. C. Johnson, who is a B. A. graduate and a teacher of some years' experience, will have charge of classes in Latin, German and English.

The literary society is doing good work. The meetings are held every Friday afternoon. The exercises consist of recitations, declamations, debates, selections of vocal and instrumental music, the reading of the "society paper" and such other matter of literary or educational kind as may contribute to the entertainment and instruction of those who take part, and all others who attend. We have heard one of the most distinguished educators of the southwest say that such a society among the students of any college was equal in educational value to the courses of study in every department of that college. A large number of the younger students have caught the inspiration, or at least the idea, and have been organized into a junior literary society. This society very wisely chose one of the teachers to be its president. It is desired and confidently expected that these societies will be very fruitful of good results to the members and therefore to the college.
