Wants Chadbourn Gotham Put on Unfair List
General President Andrew Janaskie of the American Federation of Hosiery Workers called upon the organized labor movement this week for support of a campaign to "Do Not Buy" Chadbourn Gotham, Inc., hosiery.
In a letter to all 139 National and International Unions, 80 State, Local Central Bodies, Union Label Councils, Women's Auxiliaries, and 300 members of the International Labor Press, Janaskie stated:
"We have been conducting a strike since April 22, 1957 against the Shenandoah Knitting Mills, Inc., Shenandoah, Virginia, a hosiery mill operated by the Chadbourn Gotham Inc., manufacturing women's full fashioned hosiery.
An NLRB election was won at this plant July 25 by a vote of 156 for the union and 44 against with 46 votes challenged. The Company, however, has refused to meet with the union.
This Chadbourn Gotham Company recently shut down and put up for sale the Shannon Hosiery Mills, Inc., Columbus, Georgia, where an election petition was filed with the NLRB for a unit of full fashioned knitters by the Federation.
We urge that your members "Do Not Buy" Chadbourn Gotham, Inc. hosiery. The most familiar brands are: Gotham Gold Stripe, Gotham, Gold Strike, and Larkwood."
