Justice to Whigs."
The Washington Union says there are 17,000 post offices in the Union, and complains most deplorably that some three hundred of these have been transferred into Whig hands. Of these 17,000 post-offices, not one—we venture the assertion—not one, worth having, had a Whig postmaster under the late administration! Rapidly and remorselessly were the Whigs proscribed from every office—tumbled out, however competent, to make room for a partizan democrat. The Whig party will not now be satisfied, nor will patriotism, nor "even-handed justice," until the Whigs receive at least an equal division of these 17,000 post-offices—and surely the democrats ought not to complain at this. Until there be a restoration, therefore, of half the number, or 8,500 Whigs in the post-office department, the democrats have no cause whatever to complain—Indeed it will be both indecent and very shabby in them to do so—and, as yet, but about 300 have come into their hands—an equal division will give them about 8,200 more. As with the post-office department, so it is with all the departments of the Government. And in this matter we earnestly trust that a Whig administration will see that full justice, so long withheld them, will now be meted out to the Whig portion of the American people.—Memphis Eagle.
