CHATTER ABOUT PLATTER MAKERS
PEARL BAILEY, who recently waxed two sides for the Columbia album "Inside U. S. A." (which is based on the Broadway production) is currently having the time of her life on the Paramount set of "Isn't It Romantic." The movie will be her second for Paramount.
FRANK SINATRA, who will receive a 13-week vacation from the Hit Parade soon, says he and his better half, Nancy, are expecting a heavenly bundle in the near future. They're already the parents of two children.
BILL ECKSTINE is currently appearing as a single at the Los Angeles Cricket Club. CHUBBY JACKSON, the top-flight bassist, went flat broke in Stockholm following a concert series abroad, and had to get aid from the American consul there in order to get passage back to the U. S. A. The old time trumpet master, WINGY MANONE, will sail for Paris in late April for a series of concerts.
KING COLE and his curvaceous bride, Marie Ellington, are honeymooning in Mexico City where they will remain until King Cole Trio resumes wowing theatrical audiences at Chicago's Regal Theater on April 9. LOUIS JORDAN's new flick "Look Out," which is a hilarious western musical, will be released soon.
JIMMY DORSEY will form a new band in April. Kid Ory, grand daddy of all trombone players, will make a highly touted concert in April. FLETCHER HENDERSON has signed a contract to serve as accompanist and arranger for Ethel Waters.
STAN KENTON recently declared that the "heart" music of Louis Armstrong and others of his type, is strictly passe and that modern jazz must be scientific. Since Louis has been playing to capacity audiences wherever he has played in the United States and Europe during the past year, fans don't seem to agree with the Kenton theory.
HORACE HENDERSON is currently packing 'em in at Los Angeles nighteries with a nifty little band paced by his piano. ELLA FITZGERALD failed to draw the customers in at Billy Berg's last month, so Ella was forced to end her engagement a week ahead of schedule and make a dash for the Eastern seaboard.
LES PAUL, who has just returned home after a long stay in a hospital as a result of an automobile accident, will be able to use both of his arms in the near future, according to his doctors, and should be able to resume his terrific guitar playing, which received the raves of critics following the release of "Brazil" and "Lover." His next recording, "Hip-Billy Boogie" and "What Is This Thing Called Love," should be released in three weeks.
BENNY GOODMAN opens at Philadelphia's Click Club with sextet on version of "Nature Boy" is reported by engineers who heard the master May 24. KING COLE's highly touted the being one of the most beautiful recording nostalgic numbers that has been recorded in many a year. Capitol will release it sometime next week, and your reviewer will give his opinion of same in the near future.
