FT. CARSON, Colo. (AP)—Three sergeant-instructors in an Army training company here have been charged with mistreating trainees and ordered to appear at special courts-martial.
An investigation into the alleged mistreatment has involved a commissioned officer.
Maj. Harold Fischgrund, public information officer, said the specifications against the three sergeants include unauthorized punishment, striking a trainee with the fist, kicking another trainee, striking one with a broom handle and another with the knee and hitting still another with a scrub brush.
Eight trainees were involved in the alleged incidents. None was seriously hurt, the officer said.
The charges were filed against S/Sgt. Robert E. Neely, 28, of Pelzer, S.C., Sfc. Alexander Brown, 26, of Warrington, Fla., and Sgt. James L. Hobbs, 26, of Gunnison, Miss.
The three sergeants and the company's former commanding officer, Capt. John Webb, all have been transferred. The Army said Capt. Webb, a World War II marine veteran, had an exemplary training record.
The special courts-martial probably will be held within the next 10 days. It could provide maximum punishment on conviction of six months imprisonment in the post stockade and forfeiture of two-thirds pay for the same period.
