MEMPHIS, Tenn. - She was viciously attacked by a local furniture collector, L. Davis, on August 4, Mrs. Lillian Jackson, of 247 North Dunlap Street, was able to leave the bed Wednesday for the first time within three weeks, according to reports received by the Memphis WORLD.
No account of Davis' arrest in connection with the attack has been reported but Columbus Jackson, husband of the victim and an employe at the Lamai Laundry, has filed a damage suit against the alleged attacker through Attorney Abe Rotwein.
In an interview with a representative of the Memphis WORLD, Mrs. Jackson declared that on Wednesday, August 3, Davis came to her home to collect on a stove which she purchased from the Jacob Furniture Company.
She added that she had just been dismissed from the hospital after suffering a delicate cause and was in a highly nervous condition. She told Davis that she didn't have the money at the time but her husband would come to the store and make a payment. The collector, Mrs. Jackson added, began to violently curse her. He threatened to garnishee her husband. In the meantime, Dr. E. H. Wicke, who was in attendance, witnessed the ruthless manner of the collector and reported his action to the store.
The next day, August 4, Davis came back to the home of the Jacksons and dragged Mrs. Jackson from her bed and struck her several times. She sustained bruises about the face and three broken ribs.
Mr. Jackson, husband, stated further that when the collector called upon him at his work on Wednesday, August 3, he told Davis that he would send some money to the store but didn't have any money with him at the time but added that he sent a dollar to the company by his brother the same evening.
Asked if she made any remarks to Davis when he visited at her home the first day, Mrs. Jackson said that the only statement she made to the collector was when he began cursing her. She asserted that she told Davis she'd rather let him take the stove back than to stand his insults.
