Chile Ready to Quit Axis

Santiago, Nov. 24 - INS - Chile today stood ready "to break off relations with the Axis powers if it becomes necessary" in order to aid the cause of the democracies. This pledge was made in a press statement by Pres. Juan Antonio Rios which declared his country is "solidly behind the United States and other nations of the Western Hemisphere".

But the statement added a cautious note with the declaration that "it would be senseless to provoke war with the totalitarian powers unnecessarily."

Such a step, President Rios pointed out, would involve expenditures of millions of pesos, and Chile does not have such sums at the present time.

He called attention to the long coastline that Chile must defend and in this connection made the flat assertion that his country would never permit foreign troops to establish bases on Chilean soil "even under the pretext of defending us".

President Rios has no intention of reviving plans to visit the United States, the statement added, unless personal talks with President Roosevelt should become indispensable.

He described as "utterly false" reports that Chile and another nation (obviously Argentina) had made a secret pact to maintain a policy of isolation.
