Full Text

A mob consisting of 600 men from the towns of Fulton, Porter and Center, in Rock county, went to Janesville last Sunday night for the purpose of taking Baumgartner, the child murderer, from jail and hanging him. They were met a short distance from the city by a messenger from the Sheriff, who informed them that ample preparations had been made for their reception, and that they would be welcomed with grape shot from artillery which had been placed so as to sweep the streets leading to the jail. At this announcement the brave fellows became demoralized, and their numbers suddenly diminished to about 200. These rushed into the city on various streets, and concentrated at the jail bringing with them a wagon carrying ropes, sledge hammers and crow bars. When they arrived at the jail they demanded the prisoner, but were informed that Sheriff Comstock had taken the precaution to remove the boy, and that he was beyond their reach; they would not believe this until a committee of their number had thoroughly searched the jail. When they became convinced that the vigilance of the Sheriff had saved them from the perpetration of a cowardly and disgraceful act, they withdrew to their homes.
