BORDEAUX TAKEN.
Extract of a Letter, Dated
"SAVANNAH, May 1st, 1814:
"Yesterday the Schooner Mita, Capt. Thompson, arrived, in 34 days from Bordeaux.
Captain T. had come away empty: and without papers, as the British were in possession of the City, which surrendered without firing a gun.
On passage here, Capt. T. fell in with six vessels, five of which he burnt, took the 6th, and gave up the prisoners he took out of one a little wine and dried fruit; all the others were in ballast."
Savannah, May 2.
Arrived at this port on Saturday last the fast sailing letter of marque schr. Midas, Thompson, commander, she being the only American vessel known to be at Bordeaux when the enemy sailed.
Capt. T. on his homeward passage took eight vessels and 59 prisoners, among whom were fourteen Frenchmen and two ladies. He sailed from Bordeaux, on the 11th March, and has politely favored us with the following extracts from the letter of his consignee at Bordeaux, while leaving in the roads.
"The Emperor is constantly beating, first about Troyes and then towards Rheims: his presence is necessary every where, for the Allies are pressing hard upon him. The latest accounts from Paris are very gloomy.
"The British are only three or four leagues from this city. The prefect, custom-house officer, &c. are off. A deputation is ordered to wait on the English the moment they present themselves, and it is expected they will march in to-morrow."
Capt. T. further informs that before he got out of the river, Bordeaux was actually invested by the combined armies, and that no resistance was made.
